I based Rags the puppet on my border terrier.  I wanted a good trot, bound, sniff, pant and that funny body wiggle dogs do when a wag doesn't quite cut how excited they are.  I examined a lot of marionette mechanisms, but with Rags I wired all the strings inside the puppet body to avoid tangling and so the puppeteer could be closer to the action.
